Island of the Dolls
The Island of the Dolls, or Isla de las Munecas, is definitely strange. Situated just outside Mexico City, there is an odd tale to be told; it is the former hideout of a man called Don Julian Santana, who was cast from the mainland due to his alcoholism.
Don supposedly felt haunted by the spirit of a girl who drowned in the nearby Xochimico Canal, so he put dolls all over the island by hanging them from trees, sitting them on the floor, in order to please her spirit. Electric Ladyland is a phenomenal museum – dedicated entirely to beautiful fluorescent art, there are a number of brightly coloured psychedelic structures that decorate the downstairs room. The upstairs room consists of an art gallery cast under UV light.
