Chile Struck By Earthquake
The Earthquake Has Caused Huge Damage Across The Country And Our Thoughts Are With The Chilean People.Wednesday 2nd April saw an earthquake of 8.2 magnitude hit northern Chile, resulting in a tsunami alert as well as the evacuation of people from coastal areas. So far, six people have tragically lost their lives. This is a death toll that Chilean authorities do not expect to creep any higher and there is relief that more people haven't been killed.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck at 20:46 local time, about Chile is not the only country to be affected by the quake however. Fellow South American countries Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia have also felt the after effects. The relief effort is well underway and has seen a state of emergency declared tens of thousands of people hastily evacuated from the affected areas and South American countries such as Brazil and Argentina offer their support. From all of us at WAYN, our sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the Chilean earthquake in any way. Valdivia, Chile, 1960
Measuring a magnitude of 9.5 of the Richter scale, this earthquake has gone down as the largest recorded quake in history. With a death toll of 1,655 and an estimated $550 million USD worth of damage, half a century may have passed since this disaster happened but it will be forgotten about any time soon. 2. Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA, 1964
With a magnitude of 9.2 , the Prince William Sound earthquake is the second biggest on record. What sets this apart from the 1960 Chilean earthquake was what followed afterwards. While the earthquake itself caused considerable damage, it was the ensuring tsunami which caused the most effect, with locations as far away as Hawaii affected. 3. Sumatra, Indonesia, 2004
One of the more recent quakes to hit the planet, the world woke up on Boxing Day in 2004 to discover that India's tectonic plate had dived under Burma's plate, causing an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1. The casualties following the combined earthquake and tsunami have gone down as some of the worst ever recorded, with approximately 227,900 people either killed or presumed missing and 1.7 million people from 14 countries displaced. 4. Sendai, Japan, 2011
2011 saw Japan suffer an earthquake of 5. Kamchatka, Russia, 1952
This earthquake goes down in history as being the first with a recorded magnitude of 9.0. Interestingly, much of the reported damage was suffered in the Hawaiian Islands. Thankfully, no lives were lost. http://www.wayn.com/profiles/KatieTravelBlogger? Published on April 03, 2014 by Gerard Hotels With The Best Views
